Amber was just a week away from delivering her first child at the age of 37 when we met her. Although she had been homeless and the victim of sexual assault, she was determined to continue her pregnancy. With no place to live, Amber came to Austin where her cousin, Roman, gave her refuge in his apartment, which he could barely afford despite working multiple jobs. To ensure that Amber’s newborn would have a safe place to live and to ease their burden, we provided rental assistance. Roman had recently depleted his savings to prevent an eviction, and his next paycheck was still a month away. After learning of Amber’s courage, some of our members made in-kind donations of new and used baby items, including equipment and clothing; an anonymous donor covered their utility bill. Amber and Roman expressed deep gratitude for our support. Amber possesses strong bilingual skills and will return to work as soon as possible. We pray this temporary financial relief allows them to focus on baby Luke and create a stable foundation for his future.
