Bernice and Mark recently faced a crisis that threatened the stability of their family. With five children ranging in age from 18 months to 17 years — and a baby boy due any day — they saw Mark’s moving company income drop to about half because of holiday slowdowns and winter storms. With only a portion of their rent available, they received an eviction notice, and the fear of homelessness grew as Bernice prepared for labor at any moment.
At this critical time, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul stepped in. Working with their eldest daughter to ensure the rent was paid in case Bernice needed to go to the hospital unexpectedly, SVdP helped stabilize the situation and lift the immediate burden of eviction as she approached childbirth.
Mark’s work has already begun to rebound, and an anticipated IRS refund should help restore the family’s financial footing — they simply needed support to bridge this difficult period.
SVdP members also assembled a basket of newborn essentials and clothing as a tangible sign of care and encouragement. Combined with the financial assistance, this support helped turn a moment of crisis into one of renewed stability, allowing Bernice to welcome her baby with confidence rather than fear.
Thank you to the St. Theresa community for making this stability happen for this neighbor or ours!
