Brendan, 65, is a single grandfather who lovingly raised his granddaughter, Ella, after the tragic loss of his daughter years ago. Recently, Brendan experienced another heartbreaking loss when 18-year-old Ella was killed.
In his grief, Brendan reached out to St. Vincent de Paul for help with funeral expenses. As Vincentians, we recognize how vital practical support is for our neighbors in need—support made possible by the continued generosity of our parishioners. Equally important, however, are the gifts of companionship, presence, and friendship. During our home visits, we also pray with and for those we serve, because we recognize in them the face of Christ.
Brendan expressed his deep appreciation for the kindness shown to him during this devastating time. In addition to financial assistance, we arranged a Mass for Brendan’s daughter and granddaughter, attended Ella’s funeral, and presented Brendan with engraved wind chimes bearing the names of his daughter and granddaughter.
This outpouring of care inspired Brendan to begin grief therapy at the Christi Center, with the hope of healing and one day helping others who are facing similar losses. He also felt called to return to regular Mass attendance. Through presence and compassion, St. Vincent de Paul helped transform tragedy into hope.
