Summer Reading
Grades 3-5: This is a mandatory assignment.
Take a picture/selfie of the student reading. Choose one of the 5 activities below to complete. Bring both the picture and the activity to class on the first day of school. Please choose an activity that was not done last summer. Parental approval of books is required and needs to be noted on the assignment.
1. Create a diorama of your favorite scene from the book or information learned from the book. Be sure to include the title and author. Attach the picture of you reading the book to the diorama.
2. Write a book review (1page). Include the title, author, summary, opinion, and recommendation for which grades. Attach the picture of you reading the book.
3. If the book is NOT a graphic novel, summarize the book in a comic strip format. Attach the picture of you reading the book.
4. Prepare a television commercial for your book. In class, give a “live” advertisement for the book, including your picture somehow in the ad.
5. Write a different ending to the book (1-2 pages). Attach your picture.
*Also required: Please keep track of how many days you read for 20 minutes or more by coloring in the reading tracker Summer Reading Tracker . If you do not receive a sheet, you may track this on a plain sheet of paper with the dates where you read 20 minutes or more. Students are encouraged to read books that interest them.
Below are links to a variety of standard book lists to help select a book; however, the books do not have to come from these lists. Please be aware that not all books published follow Catholic teachings, and, depending on the maturity of a child, even grade-level appropriate materials may not always be appropriate for each child.
We encourage parents to be aware of what their child is reading so that thoughtful discussions can take place, and parents can help their child select books that they feel are appropriate for their family. Parental approval is required for your child’s book selection, even from these lists. If the links do not work, please copy and paste the link.
Enjoy reading! Triple Crown Awards (4-5) Bluebonnet State Award List ( 3rd-6th) Lectio Book Awards (4th-8th)
Math Sites for Summer Practice
The Math Department at STCS strongly encourages ongoing and productive practice. Please have your child choose one or more of the following sites to keep their math skills honed and developing over the summer. These sites will provide valuable feedback to their teachers... and to you!
www.xtramath.org www.IXL.com www.khanacademy.org
Students will receive 10 computation reviews to do over the 10 weeks of summer to help keep computation skills sharp. These can be turned in at the beginning of school for an optional assignment grade.
